Sharjah Cultural Plaza Canopy
Sculptural PVDF-coated PTFE membrane suspended on tapered steel masts, creating a shaded gathering space for cultural events along the waterfront promenade.
Project Overview
Commissioned as a centrepiece for the Al Majaz waterfront, this sculptural tensile canopy spans 2,200 sqm with PVDF-coated PTFE membrane stretched over four tapered steel masts. The double-curvature geometry was form-found through dedicated FEA software to balance aesthetic gesture with structural efficiency under both desert wind and rare-event rain loads. Translucent panels filter daylight into a soft glow, while concealed up-lighting transforms the canopy into a luminous landmark after dark — a daily focal point for cultural performances and community gatherings.
